Evelyn Dunphy
My paintings are symbols of places I love and of ordinary things transformed by light shining through them. I'm deeply drawn to the northern landscape, from Maine to Newfoundland and Labrador.
I've hiked through the woods to a wilderness camp on Katahdin Lake in northern Maine and slept in a bunk bed in a hundred year old log cabin - to get up at dawn and be taken by a Maine guide down the lake to a remote spot and dropped off to paint by myself with only the sound of wind and waves lapping on the shore. There's an indescribable beauty in the remote, often barren and solitary places. I work in transparent watercolor because I love the pure washes and the luminosity of it. The medium suits my purposes and the possibilities are endless.

The Artwork Of Phil Poirier
Born: Rumford, Maine Education: Rumford High School 1971,University of Southern Maine, B.F.A., 1976 Awarded the Carina House Monhegan Artists Residency, 1996 Founding member, former Board Member and President of the Maine Outdoor Adventure Club.
An avid backpacker, camper, photographer and amateur naturalist, Phil camps year round in the northeast, as far north as central Quebec and Labrador.
As a recipient of the Carina House Monhegan Artist's Residency sponsored by the Farnsworth Museum, Phil spent five weeks on Monhegan Island, painting and hiking the island's natural wonders in the summer of '96.
Influences: from the luminists, the idea of the landscape imbued with the spiritual Asher B. Durand, a highly underrated nineteenth century painter Neil Welliver helped Phil to see that it was O.K. to paint the interior.

Memories of Maine Gallery
Mt. Katahdin is Maine's highest mountain at almost one mile high and located in Baxter State Park. In order to reach the park, one must drive by the famous landmark called "Pockwockamus Rock" which was painted by the Maine Conservation Camp Kids.
Inspiration for my art comes from living in Maine year round and loving the entire state.
By living in Millinocket, directly in the center of Maine, I am able to access the whole state within hours. Camera in hand, I traverse the area in search of subject matter. Not only do the scenes of mountains and ocean in seasonal dress provide inspiration for me in my art studio, but also in my photography…my second love. I am a self-taught artist and have been painting for over 30 years. I work primarily in acrylic and strive for realism, with a flair for looseness and imagination.
