JANUARY 16, 2007 is OPENING DAY for SUMMER RESERVATIONS
(Second year of two-year trial )
ALL ACTIVITIES WILL TAKE PLACE AT PARK HEADQUARTERS

This process will begin at Park Headquarters, 64 Balsam Drive, Millinocket; right next to McDonalds franchise and near the1st traffic light you encounter when driving west from I-95.

The doors will open at 6:30 am and the process will start at 7:00 am. One by one, as people are admitted, they will receive one ticket for one reservation. On this single opening day, Tuesday, January 16, 2007, walk-in customers only, are limited to two reservations for any campground for any date during the summer camping season. (January 13-15th is a holiday weekend and our office is closed)

If you intend to reserve for more than one trip during the 2007 camping season, be sure the first ticket you get is for your most important/favorite trip. Once everyone waiting has their first ticket processed, they may obtain a ticket for a second reservation.

Warning:
To ensure sites are available for the Rolling Reservations System, only 20% of the sites of each campground will be available for reservations on January 16th. When 20% of each campground has been reserved for any one day no other reservations will be allowed for that campground for that day until the date becomes available through the Rolling Reservation System.

Rolling Reservations
The new system will be rolling reservations, four months in advance to the day of the desired reservation. This is a day by day system, so reservations starting June 27 will not be processed until February 27, etc.
If you wanted to make reservations for July 15th, the earliest you could do so is on March 15th (four months before the start date). If you want a trip starting June 1st, you could do so on February 1st and so on.

No reservations will be made when our office is closed, but shall be accepted on the next Baxter State Park business day.

There is a limit of two (2) reservations per day for each person making walk-in or mail-in reservations.

Length of stay:
Reservations shall be accepted for up to seven (7) days for any one (1) site and any one (1) campground and up to two weeks (14 days) total duration.

Walk-in reservations
requests shall be accepted on or after the same date of the month, four (4) months prior to the starting date of the desired reservation. Early arrivals will not be accepted.

Typical example:
If a camper desires to make a reservation for five (5) days starting on July 15 the reservation shall be processed no earlier than March 15 of that year.

Note:
If you come before the starting date of the desired reservation to make a reservation, you will not be able to make a reservation for that day.

Mail-in reservations
requests shall be accepted in the BSP office not earlier than one week (7 days) prior to the first date for a walk-in reservation.

Typical example:
If a camper desires to make a reservation for five (5) days starting on July 15 the reservation shall be accepted no earlier than March 8 of that year and shall be processed no earlier than March 15 of that year.

Note:
Mail-in reservations received before one week (7 days) prior to the first date for a walk-in reservation will be returned.

Phone-in reservations
shall be accepted no earlier than ten (10) days prior to the first date of the desired reservation. There shall be a limit of one (1) phone-in reservation per call per day. Phone-in reservations must be paid by credit card.

Opening Day Explained
What does a 20% limit mean? How Many Sites are Available on Opening Day?
To ensure that the bulk of reservations are available to both mail and walk-in customers, reservations on Tuesday, Jan. 17 will be limited to 20% of sites. This allows a small group of Opening Day traditionalists the opportunity to winter camp for summer reservations, but ensures at least 80% of sites on any given day are open for the Rolling Reservation System.
The following limits will be in place for reservations on Tuesday, January 16:
  • 4 sites available per day - Roaring Brook (22 total sites)
  • 4 sites available per day - Abol (20 total sites)
  • 5 sites available per day - Katahdin Stream (24 total sites)
  • 2 sites available per day - Daicey Pond (9 total sites)
  • 2 sites available per day - Kidney Pond (11 total sites)
  • 5 sites available per day - Nesowadnehunk (26 total sites)
  • 7 sites available per day - South Branch Pond (37 total sites)
  • 8 sites available per day - Trout Brook Farm (40 total sites)
  • 2 sites available per day Chimney Pond (11 total sites inc. Davis Pd.)
  • 2 sites available per day - Russell Pond (12 total sites inc. Wass. Lk.)
Campground totals includes group areas & outlying sites, but not accessible sites.

NOTE:
This will reduce the number of reservations made on Opening Day by up to two-thirds. In past years, up to 60% of sites at the cabin campgrounds were taken for the months of July and August during Opening Day. With the new limit (20%), if 100 people had reserved 60% of the Kidney Pond’s sites for August last year, we are estimating only 33 of those people will be able to make the same reservations last year on Opening Day.
If large numbers of campers intend to make reservations on this day, the campground limits are expected to be reached quickly, and you may be disappointed with the lack of sites available for Opening Day. Campers are encouraged to be flexible in their dates and site choices and plan on using the rolling reservation system for the majority of their camping trips. On Wedensday, January 18th, the Rolling Reservation System begins and all unreserved sites (at least 80% of sites) will be available four (4) months prior to the start date of the trip.

REMEMBER, ON WEDNESDAY, JAN. 17, THE ROLLING RESERVATION SYSTEM BEGINS AND ALL UNRESERVED SITES (AT LEAST 80%) WILL BE AVAILABLE 4 MONTHS PRIOR TO THE START DATE OF THE TRIP.
Reservations at Baxter State Park are limited and we are making an effort to provide fair access to all interested parties, both mail and walk-in. You have the greatest access to available campsites by using the Rolling Reservation System. Campers who are flexible with their dates and sites will have a greater chance of successful reservations. Campers who are not flexible may face disappointment, but can re-apply during the rolling system.

How many people will be able to make reservations before the limits are reached?
The following are estimates of how many reservations we can process before reaching the 20% limit.
  • 60 reservations for May/June
  • 20 reservations between July 1-15
  • 20 reservations between July 16-31
  • 20 reservations between August 1-15
  • 20 reservations between August 16-31
  • 60 reservations for September/October
  • Opening Day limits on cabin reservations per ticket: two cabins. Note: Only 20% of the campground for each day can be reserved on Opening Day. 20% of Daicey Pond and/or Kidney Pond Campgrounds is two (2) cabins.
  • Although children 6 years of age and under camp free of charge in Baxter, for the purposes of cabin capacities (as well as lean-to's and tentsites) we must have an accurate count of every individual you are bringing. You may pay the minimum amount to hold a site but you will not be able to exceed the capacity of any site.

Please carefully weigh the options & risks of traveling to Millinocket for a 20% chance of reserving a site vs. waiting for all sites to become available through the rolling system.

This is just a quick summary to you if you are planning on traveling to Millinocket for this day.
